The lush Abatan River estuary is home to one of the most diverse mangrove forests in the Philippines, covering almost 1,000 acres and including 32 mangrove species. Eight species of firefly congregate along the river; one of them is very rare and endemic to the Philippines. The estuary has a high potential for wildlife conservation and ecotourism. The Abatan River Life Tour is one of the newest eco-tourism attractions in Bohol. It started out in 2008 as an initiative by the Abatan River Development Management Council (ARDMC). Only 10 minutes from the city of Tagbilaran lies a world rich with the culture and tradition of the Abatan River fisher folk and farmers.
Take a leisurely stroll around the Main Village Center with its five village themed shops to get a glimpse of the adventure you are about to experience. These shops feature locally made craft products and food from each of the five communities along the river: Cortes, Maribojoc, Antequera, Balilihan and Catigbian.
Board a traditional bandong and head up river where your guide will delight you with traditional stories and folklore of the region. Each village offers a different experience from basket weaving workshops, tasty native snacks, family adventure activities and cultural performances of river life expressed through song and dance.
