The Battle of Binakayan was fought on November 9-11, 1896, and is considered the first major victory of Filipino revolutionaries during Philippine Revolution. The battle took place at the town of Cavite el Viejo (now Kawit) and lasted for two days after Spanish retreat. Similar battle took place at the same day in the adjacent town of Noveleta.
The Battle of Binakayan was the first victory of Emilio Aguinaldo-led Filipino revolutionaries over the Spaniards in Cavite. The battle took place in Binakayan, a barrio in Kawit and Dalahican, a barrio in Noveleta on 9-11 November 1896.
The victory boosted the morale of the revolutionaries and further elevated Aguinaldo’s status as an excellent leader among revolutionaries. Succeeding victories of his forces followed and Cavite was virtually liberated from the Spaniards, saved for Sangley Point where Spain had a naval base. Gregoria Montoya, Generals Candido Tria Tirona and Simeon Latorre, who died in the battle, instantly became heroes. Half a thousand Spanish soldiers died and many Spanish military weapons were captured. – wikipedia.org
The Old Battle of Binakayan Monument in Barangay Samala-Marquez is the original monument erected to commemorate the Battle of Binakayan. The exact date of construction is not indicated. The monument is composed of three markers. The first commemorates the heroic death of Candido Tirona y Mata (Tria Tirona). The same marker mentions tamarind trees in the location that may have been cut down. The second marker commemorates the victory of the Battle of Binakayan on November 12, 1896. Below it is a smaller marker indicating that the monument was restored by the Primera Luz Filipina Lodge No. 69, Free and Accepted Masons, in 2009. And the third is a historical marker from the National Historical Institute installed in 1997 commemorating the Battle of Binakayan.
