In the municipality of Bacnotan, which is widely popular for its cement deposits and Sea Urchins, there’s a Barangay called Carcarmay, named after a tree that bears a sour-sweet yellowish fruit that grows abundant in the area. It is not however famous because of Carmay but because of an Acacia tree that has become the place’s witness of its growth in the various stages of our history. More than a hundred years old, it still stands majestically at the center of Carcarmay Community School, giving shade to countless graduation rites and various school and community programs. The Centennial tree is located at Carcarmay Elementary School, Bacnotan, La Union.
Based from the stories of the people of Carcarmay, after the World War II, a legion of Japanese soldiers visited the municipality of Bacnotan and they wanted to drop by at the place they were once stationed as soldiers, but unfortunately, they can’t pinpoint the exact location of their former base but one of them remembered the old Acacia tree they were hanging around before. The centennial tree is an acacia tree that has grown like a giant green parachute, its long branches and large trunk never failing to wow visitors.
