FESTIVALS IN CAGAYAN

 

Sambali Festival

 

The Sambali or Piat Sambali Festival is celebrated every year in Piat, Cagayan from June 23 to July 2. A spectacle of color, form and movement and songs is to be expected in this celebration, all brought about centuries-old cultural traditions.

The Sambali festival originated from the Sambali dance which is a war dance of the Itawis tribe of Cagayan that was converted to Christianity through the intercession of the Lady of Piat. It was revived in 1989 with the belief that it would promote the identity of the people of Piat, as well as strengthen unity and harmony among its people. Peñablanca Town Fiesta

The Peñablanca Town Fiesta is celebrated every March 18 and 19.  It is a hearty town fiesta celebration with cultural presentations, dances, trade fair, games competition and a lot of merrymaking.

 

Sinabalu Festival

This festival is celebrated in the Malueg town by cooking “sinabalu”, which is a glutinous rice with coconut cream cooked on bamboos and roasted in open fire in the town square.  As in most festivals and celebrations, there are singing and dancing presentations showcasing the culture of Malueg.  The festival is held yearly on April 25th and 26th.

 

Pamplona Town Fiesta

The Pamplona Town Fiesta held annually in the last days of April (29-30) is full of fun, color, and entertainment for everyone.  The fiesta celebration is always a grand one with all the trimmings of a real town fiesta. The celebration which focuses on Pamplona’s cultural heritage is always well-attended especially during sports activities, cultural presentations and challenger of makeshift wine making and videoke bars (locally termed as canteens) singing.   It is a great time to gather around, celebrate, and renew relationships with friends and relatives.

 

Aparri Town Fiesta

 

May 1 to 12 of every year, the town’s fiesta celebrates the patron saint San Pedro Gonzales of Thelmo with nightly festivities at the auditorium, crowning of Miss Aparri beauty pageant and the “Comparza.”

It is the only town which celebrates its town fiesta for 10 to 15 days with daily activities and nightly dancing, a showcase of the fun loving and frivolous traits of the Ybanags.

 

Semana Santa

Semana Santa Iguig Calvary Hills Held in observance of the passion and death of Jesus Christ thru the larger-than-life size concrete 14 Stations of the Cross spread on an 11-hectare rolling terrain. Iguig town is about 16 kilometers from Tuguegarao.

 

Fluvial Parade

Fluvial Parade Aparri, Cagayan May 10 It is a local festival featuring a fluvial procession of about a hundred boats of different size and shape in thanksgiving to their Patron Saint, St. Peter Thelmo. Aparri town is about 102 kilometers from Tuguegarao City.

 

Feast Day of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Piat

Feast Day of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Piat follows on July 1-2. Piat Basilica Minore, the fourth in the country, houses the image of Mary. Piat town is about 41 kilometers from Tuguegarao City.

Panagsangal Festival

Observed in the town of Baggao in Cagayan every April 25th througfh May 1st, this festival symbolizes the spirit of unity as the meaning of “Panagsangal” (being united) in the local Ilocano dialect. It is highlighted with lots of merrymaking in the form of street dancing competitiond, beauty contests and trade fair exhibits.

 

Labig Festival

This festival is celebrated in Claveria, Cagayan from May 7-9 of every year. The town holds street parades, boat-rowing competisions, beauty pageants and many other forms of merrynaking. The festival focuses on the uses of the “labig” leaf of a palm tree which grows abundantly in this town.

 

Dawa Festival

The Dawa Festival is is held in the town of Gonzaga in Cagayan, to celebrate the bountiful harvest.The word “Dawa” translates to the phrase “Flowers of Rice.” It usually involves traditional activities like dances, concerts by local and national celebrities, agri-trade fairs, cultural nights, and beauty pageants participated by the province’s most beautiful women plus exciting cooking contests and parlor games.

 

Aramang Festival

The Aramang Festival is a thanksgiving celebration every May 10th and 11th for the year’s bountiful catch of “aramang,” soft-shelled shrimps dried and exported to other parts of the country as well as other countries in the world, like Japan, Taiwan and others. The event features more than a hundred fishing boats in a grand fluvial parade.

 

Sarakat Festival

The Sarakat Festival is held every May 14th in the town of Sta. Paxedes to promote wares, art pieces, and other products made from sarakat leaves. Sarakat leaves are abundant in the area and make up a good part of the agro-industrial trade in the province. Mats, hats, and bags are somr products that can be made from sarakat. The Sarakat Festival, like most celebrations held across the Philippines, usually features street dancing competitions judged in the areas of choreography, fluidity of performance, and creativity.

 

Viray Festival

Every May 26 to May 30 of the year, the town plays host to the Viray Festival, organized by the local government with the support of the regional tourism office and the private sector. Launched in June 2005, the Viray Festival was conceptualized to dramatize the significance of the viray, which played a key role in the lives and history of the town.

An annual fluvial parade of colorful boats is held during the first day.

The second day of the festival features a grand carabao parade where each of the 16 barangays composing the municipality has their turn to show off their artistic talents.

Cabibi Festival

The yearly August 1-4 Cabibi Festival is held in the town of Lal-lo. It features a lot 0f of merrymaking including street dancing, trade fair, Balikbayan tribute, and many others. This is to offer thanksgiving in honor of their town’s patron saint.

 

Pav-Vurulun Festival

Pav-vurulun Festival is a week-long celebration that usually ends on August 16 annually. “Pav-vurulun” is an Ibanag word which means get-together or a sense of belonging. It is in this context that the city annually celebrates its patronal fiesta in honor of St. Hyacinth, the patron saint of the city. It gathers Tuguegaraoeños to a week-long festivities culminating with a mass and procession of the patron saint on August 16.
