TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN MANILA
There are many tourist spots in Manila that attract visitors from all over the world because of their beauty and historical significance.
Paco Park
Paco Park is a 4,114.80 square meter recreational garden area and was once Manila’s municipal cemetery during the Spanish colonial period. Paco Park was originally planned as a municipal cemetery for the well-off and established aristocratic Spanish families who resided within the walls of Intramuros during the Spanish colonial era.
The cemetery is circular in shape, with an inner circular fort that was the original cemetery and with the niches that were placed or located within the hollow walls. As the population continued to grow, a second outer wall was built with the thick adobe walls were hollowed as niches and the top of the walls were made into pathways for promenades. A Roman Catholic chapel was built inside the walls of the Paco Park and it was dedicated to St. Pancratius.
Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion
At the heart of old Manila, the Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion is an oasis for those looking for a serene, quiet spot that’s close to nature: it is filled with lush greenery including a miniature rain forest.
A park within a park, the Orchidarium is located inside the Luneta National Park. Around it are the National Museum, Museo Pambata, Rizal Park and its Planetarium, and the Manila Bay. Owned and managed by the Clean and Green Foundation, the Orchidarium began as a one-hectare donation from the National Parks Authority. It used to be a parking lot.
Established in 1994, the Orchidarium houses orchid species— the Philippines has reputedly the richest collection of orchids in the world—and other varieties of indigenous plant life.
The Planetarium
The first planetarium in the Philippines, with 60 seating capacity, was established in 1955 at PAGASA Astronomical Observatory located at UP Campus, Diliman. It is equipped with a Spitz Planetarium projector capable of projecting 2000 Stars, the 5 visible planets, the Sun and the Moon.
Quirino Grandstand
Quirino Grandstand is usually the venue of the oath taking of the Presidents of the Philippines. It is also the venue for most important events and ceremonies in the Philippines, whether cultural, political or religious.
Some of the events that have been held here include, the Philippine Centennial Celebration, the 1995 World Youth Day Celebration. In fact it is where Pope John Paul II held mass for more than 5 million people, which made it the world record for the largest Papal gathering in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. That should give you an idea of how large the Quirino Grandstand is.
