The lush Abatan River estuary is home to one of the most diverse mangrove forests in the Philippines, covering almost 1,000 acres and including 32 mangrove species. Eight species of firefly congregate along the river; one of them is very rare and endemic to the Philippines. The estuary has a high potential for wildlife conservation and ecotourism. The Abatan River Life Tour is one of the newest eco-tourism attractions in Bohol. It started out in 2008 as an initiative by the Abatan River Development Management Council (ARDMC).
