Calle Real , officially named as J.M. Basa Street, is a historic street located in the old downtown district Iloilo City Proper of Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines. The street often referred to as the “Escolta of Iloilo”. It is home to several fine examples of historic luxury American era neoclassical, beaux-arts, and art deco buildings. The street has been famous since the Spanish Era. However, its importance has dwindled and the street has become less maintained; yet there have been efforts to revitalize the street which includes the restoration of the historic buildings along the street and beautification projects.

Calle Real is noted for its historic buildings built many of which were built during the late 19th century until the early 20th century. Read More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calle_Real,_Iloilo

My walk along Calle Real, now called JM Basa Street, once the country’s premiere avenue of entertainment, commerce, and even technology, is one of my unforgettable experiences in writing this blog. In its climax, located along the street were stores selling luxury items, offices of local and foreign firms, consulates, and cinemas. These establishments were housed on structures constructed with magnificent and beautiful art deco designs. These are testaments of the fruits of industry, enriching the city’s culture and arts. Most importantly, they were designed and conceptualized by Ilonggos.  Read More: http://iloiloilove.com/iloilo-calle-real-awakening-queen-city-south/

Declared as a heritage site of Iloilo, the Downtown Iloilo City Heritage District, this is where you can see old buildings that were constructed during the Commonwealth era along J.M. Basa, Iznart, Aldeguer and Guanco.

It’s like exploring in a museum. You’ll see old buildings that were built during the late Spanish era that survived World War II and have fended off the ravages of time.

The street has served as a shopping district and entertainment center since 1930.

Calle Real is also called “Escolta,” similar to Manila’s own historic street of commerce. It is referred to as “Calle Real” or “Royal Street” because the street stretches from Plaza Libertad (Plaza Alfonso XII) going to the Plazoleta Gay, as well as to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol (also known as Casa Real) going to Iloilo’s elite residences.  Read More:  http://www.choosephilippines.com/go/heritage-sites/1412/calle-real/
