CEBU HERITAGE MONUMENT

The Heritage of Cebu Monument is a tableau of sculptures made of concrete, bronze, brass and steel showing scenes about events and structures related to the history of Cebu. The construction of the monument began in July 1997 and it was finished in December 2000.

Local artist Eduardo Castrillo built the sculptures of the Cebu Heritage Monument. He and the late Senator Marcelo Fernan together with donations from other private individuals and organizations funded the construction of the monument. The Heritage of Cebu Monument rises on a gated triangular patch of land called Parian Park bordered by three narrow streets in Barangay Parian, a few hops from the northern tip of Colon. It’s an eye-popping showcase of artistry that mostly depicts the start of colonial rule in the country. In it elaborate artistry, the struggle for freedom isn’t lost on us. This pastiche of handpicked events are an amalgam of what transpired in a historical past peppered by hundreds of years of colonial invasions – from the Spaniards to the Americans and the Japanese, though the spine tingling, albeit horrific invasion of Japan has been stricken out from this collection. The Cebu Heritage Monument is one place visitors of the Queen City of the South should not miss. The landmark is a tableau showcasing significant events in the history of Cebu. These events depicted on the monument start with the time of Rajah Humabon until the day Saint Pedro Calungsod was beatified.

The concrete, brass, steel and bronze sculptures were built by national artist Eduardo Castrillo. The monument was built using funds from donations given by private individuals and organizations.
