Sugat Kabanhawan Festival

Kabanhawan Festival is a festivity celebration of the Minglanillahanons showcasing their talents by means of dancing as an expression of happiness in order to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Kabanhawan is a Cebuano term means resurrection. The festival held during Easter Sunday usually done in the ground of Minglanilla Central School. The dance is composed of two categories – the Ritual Showdown and Street Dancing.

Minglanilla Cebu, a first class municipality, is also known as the “Sugat Capital” of the South. In the early days, Minglanilla was a barangay of Talisay.

It was buat, a variation of the word bulad which means dried fish. According to the church records, the town was founded in 1858 by Father Fernando Sanchez, the first Spanish priest who changed the name to Minglanilla, an obscure place in Spain where he was born. Kadaugan sa Mactan

Every April 27th, Lapu-Lapu City celebrates the “Kadaugan sa Mactan.” The event is a reenactment of the historic Battle of Mactan between Ferdinand Magellan and Cebu’s very own hero, Lapu-Lapu.

This year’s celebration will feature a samba-themed parade, “Rampada.” The theme is inspired by Brazil’s Carnival Parade, which is known for its vibrant pageantry and street parties. The city aims to attract more local and foreign visitors with this initiative. Organizers expect at least 10,000 attendees.

The week-long celebration will begin on April 27, with the reenactment of the epic battle. Decorated canoes will be featured in a fluvial procession to represent the arrival of Magellan’s ships. A reenactment of Magellan’s planting of a cross and the famous baptism of natives will follow. It is usual for the organizers to invite celebrities to portray the roles of Lapu-Lapu, Magellan, and Reyna Bulakna. In 2008, Manny Pacquiao attracted large crowds when he took on the role of Lapu-Lapu. There are no updates on this year’s cast yet. Mantawi Festival

If you find yourself on the tropical island of Cebu watching giants go past, you might think you’d been hitting the local tuba (coconut wine) too hard. In fact, it’s more likely that you’ll be witnessing the annual Mantawi Festival which is held in Mandaue city every May. Or both.

Part celebration of the city, part nod to the settlement’s history (Tipolo was first ‘discovered’ in 1521 by a Portuguese explorer in case any history buffs were wondering), this full day celebration brings together people from around the region and beyond. Dancers twirl along the streets highlighting cultural traditions and depicting scenes from the area’s past, like trade with the Chinese and Spanish. Performers are usually accompanied by a marching brass band (or ten). There are Mr. and Ms. Mandaue pageants and various other competitions. The real show-stoppers are the floats which are beautifully decked out in garlands and rainbow coloured decorations from different barangays (villages). Oh, and the ‘giants’ (higantes) – towering puppets which ‘join in’ with the festivities before the weekend is rounded off with a fireworks display.
