MAASIN CATHEDRAL
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Maasin, commonly known as the Maasin Cathedral is a baroque Roman Catholic church in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines. The church is home to one of the oldest parishes of the country, the Maasin parish established by the series of waves of missionaries namely the Jesuits, Augustinians and finally, Franciscans.
Originally built in 1700 by Jesuit priests, the church suffered several destruction and damage over the years, but has been rebuilt many times by the orders succeeding the Jesuits. Its present-day structure is constructed at 1968 and subsequently became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maasin which covers the municipalities of Southern Leyte, including the towns of Matalom, Bato, Hilongos, Hindang, Inopacan and Baybay of province of Leyte. One can not miss this old church when in Maasin City which is situated near the City Hall. Along the national road of Maasin stands the picturesque Cathedral of Nuestra Senora De Asuncion or the Maasin Cathedral.
he original church of Nuestra Senora De Asuncion was built by the Jesuits in 1700 but was destroyed twice by the Moros. It was later on rebuilt by the Augustinians but was burned in 1882. The present church was built in 1968 which became the seat of the Diocese of Maasin.
The church is only open when there are masses. It is totally closed to the public on all other time of the day. I asked the people praying outside the church why such is the case and they said that students made the church a place for dating and doing their school assignments. I was also told that there is an 11am regular mass. So just in case, drop by this time. I arrived Maasin at around 8am and I had no time to wait for the 11am mass.
