About an hour from Legazpi City, Albay’s provincial capital, lies the sleepy town of Camalig. Here, you’ll find one of the province’s hidden gems: Quitinday Hills, a 400-hectare sweep of verdant terrain that’s reminiscent of Bohol’s famed Chocolate Hills.
Standing at about 127m above sea level, the main hill can be easily surmounted with a 15-minute trek (even shorter if you’re hardcore!) along an established trail. The rutted path has a good sprinkling of craggy rocks and is secured by a length of bamboo fence. It also has a width of about one arm span, so visitors are advised to climb in single file. Overall, however, the trail’s subtle and steady incline makes it beginner- and kid-friendly.
Once you get to the top of the hill, you’ll have a choice of several viewing areas. One of these is a swath of even ground lying between two mounds, thereby affording visitors a different perspective of the hills. Here, you’ll find a nipa hut, where you can catch your breath while admiring the expanse of rolling hills and jagged peaks. Quitinday Hills is situated in the village of the same name in the town of Camalig, Albay. It covers a land area of approximately 400 hectares, dotted with verdant mounds or hills that resemble the famed Chocolate Hills of Bohol. But despite the similarities, Quitinday Hills offers a unique charm and vibe with the majestic Mount Mayon in the backdrop. It is as if a combination of two iconic Philippine spots, dramatic and magical.
Aptly called as “Pili Nut Hills”, the hills of Quitinday range from 100 to 130 meters in elevation. There is no exact figures on how many mounds comprise the entire complex but two peaks have been open for tourism purposes. These peaks offer a 360-degree view of the area and an unobstructed view of Mayon Volcano.
The two peaks are connected by a single track trail which can be reached within 15 minutes of gradual trekking from the trailhead. Guide is not necessary as the trail is well established but an environmental fee of P20 is collected for every guest.
Best time to go here for sunrise (early morning) or before sunset (late afternoon), when Mayon Volcano is usually clear. The trail is open daily from 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Camping is allowed but requires advanced permit, contact Jed Villanueva from Camalig Tourism at +639276213315. Quitinday Green Hills is located in Barangay Quitinday in Camalig. It is dubbed as “Pili Nuts Hills” because of its pointed tops, an amazing geological formation that looked like the famous Chocolate Hills of Bohol. But there are two things that differed one from the other. First,Quitinday Green Hills has three summits that could be trekked by visitors unlike in Chocolate Hills; this famed tourist spot is for viewing only from the view deck. And second, these hills are in lush green all year round, hence the name green hills.
It was quite a long drive but thanks to the scenic pastoral environment that made our journey relaxing. Trees abounded but houses were sparse. If you are not used to this place, you might get scared. But let excitement rule above fear. I knew then, this long trip will lead us to a wonderful adventure with nature.
