A dozen people onboard a paddle-driven raft chorused with expressions of amazement as flashlights cut through the darkness of a magically-hewn cavern serving as an underground passage in this quaint rural town of a long river straddling from the lower slope of the majestic Mt. Mayon.
Called the Quitinday Underground River situated in Barangay Quitinday, less than a kilometer from the downtown, this extraordinary water conduit offers a narrow arch at its upstream entrance to where the rapids turbulently flow into the four-meter-deep pool inside the cave.
The cave’s width varies from five to eight meters, depending on the irregular span between its walls that feature a strange buildup of finely sculptured limestone rocks that eerily look like an army of animated small minions in fancy formations. About 30 minutes from the Green Hills is the underground river in Jovellar. This pristine subterranean waterway may not be as long as that of Puerto Prinsesa but is as majestic nevertheless. A bamboo raft will take you through the length of the cavern, glimmering stalactites jutting from the darkness and an occasional bat zipping out of sight. At the other end is an underground falls where you can bathe. The water is raging, but cool, and extremely invigorating! You can also (very carefully) explore upstream where the water is less vehement but as refreshing. After finishing our lunch, we then proceeded to our next destination, Jovellar Underground River or commonly known as Quitinday Cave and Sigpit Falls or commonly known as Quitinday Falls. While the name is also Quitinday, please note that the hills and cave/falls are from two different municipalities. The Underground River and Sigpit Falls are located in Brgy. Quitinday, Jovellar, Albay which is about an hour away from Quitinday Green Hills.
Make sure that you already wear your swimming outfit before you get there since there are no bathrooms at the cave or river, only at the entrance near the parking area. It’s just sad that you still have to pay PhP10 when using the CR even if you only used it for changing clothes and the PhP10-pay as written is meant for using the shower.😢 Bring also your waterproof bag/pouch to keep your things dry and secured.
