Parayan Festival – Thanksgiving for Good Rice Harvest

The Parayan Festival is a grand celebration of the Earth and one of its primary products – rice. This annual celebration is the town’s ultimate gesture of thanksgiving to the Almighty and will pay tribute to the role of the hardworking rice farmer in national economy.

“Parayan“, a Waraynon word which means plentiful rice harvest is depicted through a dance ritual in honor of the Patron Saint of the farmers, Señor San Isidro de Labrador. The dance moves to the sound of the drums and this resembles the fluid swaying of the rice stalks being directed by the wind blow. The rice stalks with its leaves and the grains of golden rice create a tingling sound when blown by the wind which in harmony with the tweeting of the birds, the leaping of the frogs and the sound of all other creatures come a magnificent chorus of a hundred ensembles. Parayan Festival was a yearly grand festivity in the Municipality of San Roque, Northern Samar in celebration of its Founding Anniversary which was held every 16th of March. The annual celebration is one of the town’s ways of showing its gratitude to the Almighty on a bountiful harvest of rice and crops grown in the locality. The word “Parayan” is a waraynon word which means an abundant harvest of rice and is attributed to Señor San Isidro de Labrador, as the Patron Saint of the farmers.

The Parayan Festival highlights the celebration with a dance parade and floor show competition participated in by the different barangays of the municipality. Parayan Festival is always held as part of the activities of the founding municipality of San Roque, a fourth class town of Northern Samar, every March 26.
