Peñafrancia Festival is considered as the grandest Marian Celebration in the Philippines. Marian devotees and Bicolanos from different parts of the world unite in faith to manifest their great devotion to the beloved “Ina” and patroness of Bicol – the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
Celebrated every September in honor of Divino Rostro and Our Lady of Peñafrancia, thousands of devotees flock to Naga City, Camarines Sur to join the festivities.
One of the highlights of the festival is the “Traslacion” where the miraculous image of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia and the Divino Rostro is transferred to Naga City Metropolitan Cathedral where the novena and holy masses are held. The feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is celebrated by millions of Filipino Roman Catholics in the City of Naga, Camarines Sur province, on the third Saturday and Sunday of September. A nine-day novena is offered to the Our Lady of Peñafrancia starting on the second Friday of September. On the first day of the novena, the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is transferred from the Penafrancia Shrine to the Naga Cathedral in a procession attended by many devotees. On the ninth day of the novena, the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia will be returned to the Basilica Minore in a Fluvial Procession. Peñafrancia Festival is one of the biggest Marian festivals in the world. It is held every September in Naga City, Camarines Sur where thousands of devotees and tourists converge to give honor to the Our Lady of Peñafrancia. The festival took place in its 304th year making it one of the oldest festivals in the Philippines.
Our Lady of Peñafrancia is the Principal Patroness and Queen of Bicol who is endearingly addressed by Bicolanos as Ina (mother). The shrine which is dedicated to her gathers more than five million devotees every year and is known as one of the biggest Marian pilgrimage sites in the world.
The festival started with a nine-day novenario to the Divino Rostro which is brought to the old Peñafrancia Shrine, the old home of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia, through a procession and stays there for nine days of novenario.
