Calinawan Cave is one of the most interesting, promising and history rich destination near Metro Manila. A serene place that situated at Rawang Hills, Brgy. Tandang Kutyo, Tanay in the province of Rizal.

Exploring the entire cave will take half an hour or more. Passing through narrow passages and ducking for low ceilings with a dark claustrophobic corridor will surely make everyone’s journey to Calinawan Cave more adventurous. The temperature under the cave is cold, it feels like you are inside an air-conditioned room. While roaming around the cave you’ll get amazed with the formations of stalactites and stalagmites. And the interesting fact was a dripping of stalactites will take a hundred years before it will form as stalagmites. Situated in Barangay Tandang Kutyo of Tanay, Rizal, Calinawan Cave is an enormous cave system composed of multiple levels and various chambers and openings. History tells us that the cave served as hideout by Filipino revolutionaries during Spanish-American war, and a shelter during the Second World War. How it got its name, according to local folklore, has a touch of history too, as it was where the Japanese and American troops settle their disputes, thus Calinawan from the Filipino word “linaw” which means to settle or to clear.

But more than its historical significance, the natural beauty of the cave’s interiors and chambers are magnets that attract a lot of people that even films and television productions often use the cave as their shooting location. Calinawan Cave is one of the most accessable destination from the metro that will give you an entirely different air. I, personally can’t believe that I just travel a couple of hours to reach such tranquil spot – a very promising destination that makes me wander more. Wander if we can add more years to these places’ life span?

Calinawan cave is a cave found in Brgy. Tandang, Kutyo, Tanay Rizal – it is named after the historical event where Filipino settled and agreed on their disputes between Spanish Revolutionaries, the agreement promises “linaw” a Filipino word for clarity (the bisayan word “kalinawan” means “peace” suits very well too). From what I have seen, the part that was opened for spelunking is just a small part – and yes it is, according to our guide the cave is composed of seven levels and only two were open as the others are not yet explored.
