A first in Mindanao, and one-of-its-kind in the Philippines, D’ Bone Collector Museum is a welcome addition to the ever growing number of museums in Davao City. The Museum features a unique collection of over 200 well-preserved skeletons of various animal species from different environments such as the plains, shallow seas and reefs, tropical rainforests, lowlands, and arid regions, including the skeletal remains of two rare sperm whales, one of which is a 41-foot (12.4 meters) long sperm whale which is the largest species of toothed whale and on display at the center of the Museum. The bones of the sperm whales are among the 47 skeletal remains displayed in the world and two of only four in the Philippines. Whenever we’re at the beach or out on the open ocean, I have a habit of picking up any refuse I can find – plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, empty bags of chips. I don’t do it often nor do I make it my personal mission. I just do it given the opportunity because I find trash floating in an otherwise perfect ocean unsightly.
Little did I know that I may have been inadvertently saving a few animals in the process. Thanks to the D’ Bone Collector Museum in Davao City, I now understand that picking up trash on the beach isn’t just about prettying your environment. It’s about preserving it too.
The museum is a 3-story building fronting Nograles Park. On the second floor are the bones of terrestrial animals. All skeletons at the museum are from animals that died of natural causes. Spread over 3 floors, this privately funded and run museum boasts of a really large selection of bones – from whales to primates to a human skeleton. The emphasis here is on education, not cheap macabre stunts and the way the very knowledgeable guide took us on the journey of discovery have made the entire experience memorable.
While the collection is impressive indeed, it is the passion and pride that the guide exuded that impressed me. She was friendly and yet have deep knowledge of the collection and even the back stories behind them. There were a lot of sobering truths about how humans have made a negative impact on wildlife and our guide was able to explain each one of them. Other places should take note of how this museum is training and motivating their guides.
