Church of the Angry Christ. The name invokes a sense of wonder. Perhaps because anger is one of the seven deadly sins and it’s strange that a Catholic Church would associate Christ with it. The St. Joseph the Worker chapel is different among Negros Occidental churches, or perhaps even among the churches in the Philippines.
St. Joseph the Worker Chapel, commonly known as the Church of the Angry Christ is located inside the Victorias Milling Company (VMC) compound in Negros Occidental. The company built the church to serve the Catholic employees and their families living inside the VMC community composed of seven barangays. I was in recently in Bacolod for 36 hours and I just had to visit the Church of the Angry Christ. Actually that’s really not the name of the church located inside the Victoria’s Milling Company compound in Victoria city Negros, Occidental. The Church is actually called The Church of Saint Joseph the worker, but because of the fantastic mural created by artist Alfonso Osorio it has become famous and has taken this name.
The mural was started in 1948 and finished in the late 1950’s the artist Alfonso Osorio is from the family that started and owned the Victoria’s milling corporation. Educated and living abroad he was barely living in The Philippines. He has a very colorful past and has connections with the greatest artists of the abstract period like Jackson Pollact among others. I began hearing about him through the play written by Floy Quintos and because of this because interested with his work.
I then read more about him in Rogue magazine and told myself that when the time comes that I get to Bacolod again I will seek it out. Thank goodness that I was a guest at the L’fischer hotel and they had arranged a guided tour by the hotel. Try and book and look for Gerry as he is very well informed about Bacolod and it’s neighboring towns. Read More: https://rajolaurel.com/blogs/life/the-church-of-the-angry-christ?from=10
