The rich tri-people culture and the allure of nature come together as Cotabato Province celebrates the colorful Kalivungan Festival from Aug. 24 to Sept. 1 in observance of its 98th Founding Anniversary.
Coined from the Manobo word which means “gathering”, the fete is a weeklong celebration showcasing its ethnic music and dance, rituals, and way of life.
A major highlight of the festivity is the Kavurunan Festival set on Aug. 25-27 in Antipas town which brings to the fore the 13 indigenous peoples (IP) tribes namely: Teduray, Manobo, Tagabawa, Igorot, B’laan, Matigsalog, Ilianen, Kirintiken, Tinananon, and Aromanen.
An Aromanen-Manobo term for “gathering”, Kavurunan was incorporated in the provincial events to recognize the contribution of IPs in the economic development and peace efforts in Cotabato.
Exotic tribal music will echo at the Kulentangan Extravaganza on Aug. 27 at the Pikit Municipal Plaza which will display the musical artistry of Muslims and lumads through the “kulintang” brass percussion instrument.
Merry-making reaches fever-pitch at the Street Dancing Showdown on Sept. 1 at the Provincial Capitol Grounds in Amas, Kidapawan City where municipal contingents will render contemporary interpretations of traditional Muslim and “lumad” tribal dances.
