While many people prefer to build their home in landlocked areas, some choose to have theirs on top of water. After all, nothing beats waking up to sun over the horizon. Visiting Day-Asan, a village on stilts, gives you the kind of pleasure that you don’t normally experience every day. The beauty of this place can be hard to put in words as its silent charm captivates you and soothes your soul.
The Day-Asan Floating Village is a fishing community that consists of houses on wooden stilts or rock piles in shallow water and along a mangrove forest. It is fondly coined by locals as the “Little Venice of Surigao City.” Perhaps one of the reasons is that the best and fastest way you can get from one house to another is by boat, just like in Venice. There are wooden bridges that link clusters of houses to the mainland. People in this quaint floating village earn a living by fishing and raising crabs and lobsters. No words can probably describe the beauty and silent charm of Day-asan Floating Village in Surigao City. Hailed as the “Little Venice of Surigao City”, the village is a fishing village consisting of houses on wooden stilts above the water. It is a barangay in Surigao City, the capital of the province of Surigao del Norte in the Caraga Region of Mindanao.
Home to about 1,800 people, the small wooden houses of the Day-asan Village stand on wooden stilts or piles of rock in shallow water among mangroves. Instead of roads, there are narrow bridges for pedestrians and waterways between the houses which are plied by small bancas or river boats. At certain points along the waterways are found village meeting houses known as purok centers, where public gatherings take place. These are large round huts with roofs that resemble a salakot. The residents not only go out to sea to fish for their livelihood but raise fish and lobsters in enclosures in the village. The main resort in the area is the Daydream Laguna Resort and Teppinyaki Restaurant.
