LAKE MAINIT

Lake Mainit is the fourth largest lake in the country; It has a total area of about 17,060 hectares and its lake-shore has total length of 62.10 kilometers. The lake is divided almost equally between the provinces of Agusan and Surigao del Norte. It is most known for its rich fish resources. There are 31 barangays in the municipalities of Mainit, Alegria, Kitcharao & Jabonga.

Lake Mainit is reported to be the habitat of rare fish species; the puyo or perch and gabot. These species have become rare due to the introduction of new fish species. Habitats of other rare and threatened wildlife put the lake and its surrounding area of high ecological value. The lake is undeniably very scenic. Its water has remained generally clear and clean. There are various points around it that could be potential tourist attractions. Thus, in the Caraga Tourism Master Plan, the lake area is defined as tourism sub zone, mainly for adventure tourism and ecotourism. Read More: https://lmda.wordpress.com/about-lake-mainit/

It has a maximum depth of about 223 meters and an elevation of 37 meters above sea level. It is one of the natural ecosystems in the region that possesses a great potential to compete with other more famous natural wonders.  Lake Mainit’s aquatic resources are highly diverse; it is a home of different fish species – the main source of livelihood of the townspeople. Tilapia is very common in the lake.

The name of the lake, “Mainit,” is a common Filipino word which means hot or warm, a fitting description of the temperature of the water. Its unspoiled waters are surrounded by a variety of hot and cold springs. The lake is described as pear-shaped, but some say that it looks like a teardrop.   Read More:  https://www.vigattintourism.com/tourism/articles/A-Warm-Welcome-from-Lake-Mainit
