The Laswitan Falls and Lagoon is actually a unique 20-foot rock formation located near the shore in Cortes. This geological feature creates three natural basins so that when the surf becomes high, the huge waves would flow and spill into the main basin on the other side, thus creating a waterfall effect.

The lagoon below the rock formation is so huge in that it can fit up to 200 people – maybe even more! Tourists visiting the place can dip in these pools and get themselves splashed by the sea water coming from the other side. Laswitan has been quickly popular with tourists traveling to Surigao del Sur.

Laswitan is a 20-foot rock formation with three lagoons. The name derives from the word ‘laswit’ which means splash. When the water is high, it creates huge waves that will splash on the rocks and it creates a waterfall effect.

Laswitan has three lagoons:

Lagoon 1 – Visitors can swim but they are advised to be careful because there are sea urchins in the lagoon.

Lagoon 2 – It is the most popular, it is bigger and a lot of people swim in this area. However, visitors are advised not to go beyond the rope and always use life jacket to prevent accidents.

Lagoon 3 – Is a swimming area and it is 10 ft. deep. The guide said it is for adults only.

Laswitan comes from the Visaya word, laswit, meaning the sea water pounding on the rocks. Laswitan is unique because of the strong waves crashing on a 20-foot rocky sea wall and spilling over the other side to fill up a rock pool. Guests can dip on the 2 rock pools as they are showered by sea water splashing from the other side. Best time to see Laswitan is from October to mid-March. There is one sizeable sheltered hut for day use with a nominal rental fee. Kamalig – this is the only lodging in Cortes, P600/head. Best to make arrangements with Cortes LGU before coming over.
