SUHOT CAVE AND SPRING

Suhot Cave and Cold Spring in barangay Dolores has a newly built seven-room accommodation for overnighters and a number of nipa huts which may be rented for day excursions. Before the building was built, the caves and spring were the main attraction, attracting excursionists from as far as Iloilo. “During the Holy Week, a group of manggagamot or albularyos from Iloilo City would go inside the cave from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. They would drink only water to sustain themselves. It is believed that the cave possesses energy that renews the healing powers of these albularyos.

The place got the name suhot, which means lumusot or to go under, because the cave is very long and it is believed to have a connecting tunnel leading to another cave six kilometers away called the Badiang cave, located in the middle of the dense jungle of neighboring town Dumarao. The cave used to have a small opening in the old days, and served as a makeshift hospital during the Japanese occupation. At 18 kilometers, the Suhot Cave is one of the longest in the country, but only two kilometers have been explored so far. “Few have tried to go explore the length and breadth of the caves because you could get lost inside. There is a spot there that branches out into more channels, going deep into god knows where. One thing we know for sure, one channel exits to the municipality in Dumarao, as some of the locals have tried it. It took them seven days.

While on a road trip in Capiz, we dropped by in Suhot Cold Spring in the municipality of Dumalag. Another place that attracted the freelance writer spirit in me. The place was rather simple yet unspoiled. There were many people when we went there ( it was a Holy Week and the height of summer) but sans the crowd and vendors, the whole place was rather untouched by modernity.
But we were more attracted to its natural cave formation. I can imagine how these caves were used as a temporary shelter during the Second World War or as a secret meeting place to lovers. Read More: http://www.valcaulin.com/article/spelunking-in-capiz-suhot-cave-and-cold-spring/1392/
