The Cebuano town of Tudela on Camotes Island is renowned for its Taganitohan Festival every December 8-9, a Cebu fiesta that showcases the unique Filipino amalgam of Christianity and paganism. During this Cebu festival, various street parades showcase the town’s history of worship of spirits, known locally as ‘anito’; ‘tag-anitohan’ literally means ‘place of spirits.’ A highlight of this festival in Cebu is a series of dances featuring the reenactment of the rescue of townspeople from Moro invaders by Mandayang, a warrior who used native talismans to summon spirits and defeat the intruders. The town of Tudela in Camotes Island, Cebu celebrates Tag-Anito Festival every December 8-9 of the year to commemorate the colorful culture and history including its separation from Poro Island in 1911.
Tag-Anito is the worshipping ritual of early pioneers to spirits that protected them from harm and gave bountiful harvest or hunting expedition. This annual celebration showcases the unique ritual traditions of their ancestors through street dancing competition. During this event, reenactment of the tribes’ traditions is performed with unique choreography. The highlight of this festival is a dance perception of town’s rescue from Moro invaders by a local hero known as Mandayang. According to town’s folklore, Mandayang used talisman to mobilize the help of spirits or anitos to defeat the enemies.
