SINANGGIYAW FESTIVAL

The Sinanggiyaw Festival of Dumanjug highlights the abundance of the farm products of the town along with the fertility of their land. It aims to show visitors what the town can offer to the world even as the town is gradually becoming more urban rather than rural. Similar to other festivals in the archipelago, the Sinanggiyaw Festival also celebrates the feast day of the patron saint of the town, St. Francis of Assisi. The festival has been celebrated on October 4 of each year since 1855.
It is believed that the festival started off as a religious celebration before it gradually transformed into the grand celebration it is today. Despite this change, the festival still highlights giving thanks for the blessings the residents of the town receive each year. I was surprised that the town has its own festival, the Sinanggyaw Festival. Every October 4th, they celebrate this festival in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Sinangyaw means “sangi-sayaw”. It is a colorful festive to give thanks to the patron saint for the good harvest of corn, fruits and vegetables.
After the street parade, we went to their Poblacion to visit their Church. In front of their Church, the whole town was celebrating the Sinanggyaw festival, but still, I was amazed because there were hundreds of devotees were present to attend the Holy Eucharist Mass. Indeed, wherever you go in the Philippines, Roman Catholic Church is very strong in the Philippines. Catholic influence is emotionally active in the Philippines. The name Sinanggi-yaw is taken from two old Cebuano words, Sinanggi meaning abundance of harvested agricultural products of our farmers and Sayaw meaning dance. Through street dancing and field presentation, performers shall dance merrily bringing all the Sinanggi-performance focused on three aspects: planting, harvesting and thanksgiving.
