Fiesta sa Mandaue

Thousands of spectators yesterday filled a main street in Mandaue City to watch street dancing by six contingents in Spanish-period costumes for the Panagtagbo Festival.

Dancers performed to lively, pre-taped music as the parade occupied A.C. Cortes Avenue and headed to the Mandaue City sports complex where a showdown would be held at 8 p.m. and contest awards announced.

“Panagtagbo” which means “meeting” in Cebuano was originally Mandaue’s participation during the ritual transfer of the Sto. Nino icon from Cebu City to Mandaue city during the religious feast of the Holy Child in January.

Yesterday was the third year of the festival, this time as a runup to Mandaue’s annual fiesta on May 8.

Banig Festival

Banig Festival is a local festivity that is being celebrated by the residents of Badian Municipality, Cebu Province.

It is usually celebrated on July (25) to align with the feast day of its local patron saint – James the Apostle. This means that aside from promoting the local product(s), it is also expresses the people’s religiosity and probably their sense to gratitude for this source of livelihood.

‘Banig’ is a hand-woven ethnic floor mat commonly used as traditional bed (floor spread) where users sleep on it. It is made of local plant leaves or stalks depending on the area and availability of the materials.

The festival itself is being celebrated by the locals as a fiesta which showcases the Cebuano and Badianganon culture and tradition. During this festivity, delicacies, various sorts of products (mostly organic) and its famous ‘banig’ (mat) are being showcased and are also available to purchase. Rosquillos Festival

The Municipality of Liloan is a town located in the northern part of Cebu. It offers a number of places tourists can visit if they get the chance to drop by the town. Similar to other towns on the island, Liloan also celebrates the Rosquillos Festival every year. The festival highlights the product that has contributed to the local economy and brought honor to the town.

The Rosquillos is a circular cookie that resembles a donut since it has a hole in the middle. It is made of flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder and shortening. Its origin can be traced back to 1907 when Margarita “Titay” Frasco created the crunchy cooking with the ingredients she had in her kitchen. Using her egg beater, baking tins, and clay oven, Titay created what became one of the best-loved delicacies in the town.
