The Chocolate Hills are an unusual geological formation in the province of Bohol, Philippines. According to the latest survey done accurately, there are 1776 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers (20 sq mi). They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season; hence it is named Chocolate hills.

The Chocolate Hills is a famous tourist attraction in Bohol. They were featured in the provincial flag and seal to symbolize the abundance of natural attractions in the province. They are also included in the list of Philippine Tourism Authority’s tourist destinations in the Philippines; they declared the country’s 3rd National Geological Monument and proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Chocolate Hills are a group of unusually shaped hills located in the middle of the island of Bohol in Philippines. This extraordinary landscape is unique to this small island.

It is unknown how many chocolate hills there are. It is known that at the bare minimum there are 1268 hills but some estimates put this number as high as 1776.

The hills are not huge; the highest one barely reaches 120 meters in height. Even so, most hills are between 30 and 50 meters. The conical Chocolate hills are scattered within a fifty square kilometer area.

Mystery still surrounds how the Chocolate Hills were formed. One of the more popular local legends is that long ago, two giants fought for days, hurling earth and stones at one another, until they fell exhausted, friends once more, into each other’s arms.   Read more:  http://www.chocolatehills.net/

Chocolate Hills are a bizarre and popular attraction in the middle of the island of Bohol in the Philippines. In the dry season, the 1,776 symmetrically shaped conical mounds covering 20 square miles turn brown, and look like endless rows of chocolate kisses—which is how they got their name.

There are three legends explaining the formation of the Chocolate Hills. The first tells about a fight and feud between two giants who hurled rocks at each other until they tired and became friends, forgetting all about the mess they’d made. The second legend speaks of a giant named Arogo who fell in love with a mortal, Aloya. When she died, he was in such pain he could not stop crying, and when his tears dried, they formed the Chocolate Hills. The third legend is the least appetizing and tells of a giant carabao (water buffalo) who ate all the villager’s crops. Finally, the townspeople couldn’t sacrifice their good food anymore, so they piled up all the spoiled food for the carabao to eat. He ate it, but couldn’t digest it, and left behind him mounds and mounds of feces, which dried into the Chocolate Hills.
