SEAFDEC or South East Asian Fisheries Development Center is a government owned facility that studies development of marine life and the proper way to culture it in order to help fishermen work for better livelihood opportunities. This facility looks like a simple fishpond but there’s more than meets the eye.

For a small fee of Php 25, the facility also served as a tourist spot which I think one of the best experience I had in Guimaras. The caretaker discussed different species of fish and how they are being cultured.   Read More:  http://www.adventurousfeet.com/2013/03/part2-iloilo-guimaras-day-2-island.html

SEAFDEC or the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center was my first destination during my Guimaras island hopping tour. Since this was my first island hopping experience in Guimaras Island, this was also my first time to visit the SEAFDEC facility. The research center is where they breed and study different species of fishes and other marine life–including the biggest Grouper or Lapu-lapu I have ever seen!

While approaching the facility, large fish pens and cages can been seen from afar. We docked in a floating cottage which happens to be their Floating Laboratory. The security guard who welcomed me also served as my tour guide around the facility. He shared some information about their breeding and hatchery processes and basically stuff about fisheries which added to my knowledge. He also showed to me the different species of fishes such as giant grouper, pompano, seabass and red snapper contained in their fish cages. I was overwhelmed by the monstrous size of their fishes!   Read More:  http://www.pinoytravelfreak.com/2013/03/guimaras-seafdec-at-igang-marine-station.html

The Igang Marine Station (IMS) of SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) is located on the southwest portion of Guimaras Island in the Philippines. IMS is composed of four islets and clusters of floating fish cages interconnected by floating foot bridges. The station maintains hundreds of broodstock of various commercially important species that provide eggs for research and production runs.

The station was established in 1974 primarily for studies on the breeding of tiger shrimp in pens. The major breakthroughs of SEAFDEC/AQD were the completion of the life cycle of tiger shrimp in captivity in 1975 and of milkfish in 1983.

New hatchery technologies have been developed for fry production of high-value species such as grouper, seabass, snapper, and pompano to cater to the needs of fish farmers.  Read More:  https://www.seafdec.org.ph/our-organization/stations-facilities/igang-marine-station/
