THE BEAUTY OF TAWI-TAWI

Ask me what’s the finest white sand beach I ever saw and hands down I will say aloud- Panampangan Island, off the coast of Tawi-Tawi. Panampangan Island White Beach is actually part of the Municipality of Sapa-Sapa, Tawi-Tawi. Some also call this the “virgin beach” because only a few go here. We are 10 in the boat and 9 on us are first-timers. See, how lucky I was thinking that all of them are locals of Tawi-Tawi and Sulu. Sangay-Siapo Island

Sangay Siapo Island with clear water where you can enjoy swimming and day trip picnics. The beach’s shoreline is lined with white sand, lots of tiny pebbles, corals and starfish. There’s also a picturesque wooden pier on one side of the island.

The place used to have a resort, but the main structure has been abandoned. There are a few caretakers and families living on the small island, but visitors need to bring their own food and snacks if they plan to picnic here. Omapuy Island

Omapuy Island (also Omapui Island, Omapoy Island, Umapuy Island) is an island bounded by seaweed farms situated in the turquoise to emerald green sea. Adding charm to the island is a number of stilt houses ostensibly buoyant over the shallow waters. Across this island is Sipangkot Island, known to be a home to several Sama Dilaut and Tausug people. They are the ones who collect the agar-agar that abound the area.

Omapuy is indeed one of the beaches that can be tagged as untainted and pristine. The long and wide stretch of white sand beach is a world of wonder to any beach-lover. It is also a great place to watch the sun set at this side of the Philippines. During my visit last August 15, 2015 – we were very fortunate to have the entire beach to ourselves. Chinese Pier

Traders from all over Tawi-Tawi converge at the Chinese Pier. Historically, it’s the place where Chinese traders used to exchange goods with locals, hence the name. Also, if you plan to explore some of the other municipalities like Sibutu and Sitangkai, you’ll find passenger boats docking here. The Old Chinese Pier in the downtown area in Bongao is a bustling port where you can find a variety of passenger and cargo vessels docked – from rickety old boats to brightly painted ones, tiny fishing boats to modern ferries and fast crafts. Fringed by houses on stilts, market stalls, stores and small eateries at the seaside level in the downtown area, this is the center of commerce in the province.
