Julien’s Wreck is one of Sipalay’s 44 magnificent diving spots that’s named after the sunken cargo vessel found in the area. What remains of the ship is now covered in barnacles and corals which serve as home to several schools of fish and other marine creatures. Julien’s Wreck did not give me the eerie feel. The water is so clear that it provides visibility even if you are just in the outrigger boat. And even if you are not a swimmer, you can enjoy the sight as you snorkel. I knew I had to go down and freedive my way to get a closer look at this remain but I had problems to hurdle.

For non-swimmers, the best time to go to Julien’s Wreck is during low tide where the ruins of the sunken cargo ship can be outlined from above water. The depth is shallow for professional water adventurers as the wreck is only 6 to 15 meters deep but it is a totally different world going down the sea bed. According to one of the dive masters of Artistic Diving Resort, Julien’s Wreck was named after a cargo ship full of corn cobs. In the 1980s, Sipalay was one of the stop-overs of cargo vessels going on long trips.

The captain of the ship (Julien’s) was so tired and decided to rest on one of Sipalay’s islets. The captain wasn’t able to estimate the distance properly, and the ship passed through shallow waters and crashed into a hard corral. The ship was shattered into three parts.

Wreck-diving at Julien’s offers an experience that divers will remember throughout their entire lifetimes. I, too, was amazed by the beauty that was hidden underneath, by the colorful fishes, by the wreck itself, and by the amazing corals covering the ocean floor.
