The MassKara Festival is an annual festival with highlights held every fourth Sunday of October in Bacolod, Philippines. The most recent festival was held October 8-28, 2018. The festival sites include the Bacolod Public Plaza, the Lacson Tourism Strip and the Bacolod Government Center.

The word “Masskara” is a portmanteau, coined by the late artist Ely Santiago from mass (a multitude of people), and the Spanish word cara (face), thus forming MassKara (a multitude of faces). The word is also a pun on maskara, Filipino for “mask” (itself from Spanish máscara), since it is a prominent feature of the festival and are always adorned with smiling faces, giving rise to Bacolod being called the “City of Smiles”. MassKara Festival is a yearly festival in Bacolod City with features each 4th Sunday of October with road artists in vivid outfits, covers and hats. Bacolod City welcomes you to the “most joyful and most brilliant celebration in the Philippines” which will be a month-long festival with shows, sustenance fests, road parties, and a ton of exercises will attract a great many guests to the City of Smiles.

The Masskara celebration was first imagined in 1980 to add shading and jollity to the Bcolod City’s festival of its Charter Day commemoration, on 19 October. The image of the celebration – a grinning veil – was received by the coordinators to sensationalize the Negrenses glad soul, in spite of intermittent financial downturns in the sugar business. The word Masskara comes from the words ‘mass’ (people) and the Spanish word ‘cara’ which means face. The late artist Ely Santiago combined the two words to form Masskara. The festival originated in 1980 when about 750 lives (many of whom were Negrenses) were taken due to a tragedy at the sea. It was at that sorrowful event that the then mayor of Bacolod initiated the festival to put back the smiles in his people’s faces. Hence, the Masskara Festival was born.
