BUGANG RIVER
Bugang River is a river situated in Panay island of the Philippines which is noted for its distinction as the “Cleanest Inland Body of Water” in the country.
Bugang River entirely traverses Pandan town of Antique province. It has a length of 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) Its headspring is 30 meters (98 ft) deep. The river originates from around the area of the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park From upstream to Pandan Bay where it converges, Bugang flows through the barangays of Candari, Santo Rosario, Guia, Zaldivar and Mag-aba.
During the summer season, water levels of the river temporarily decreases.
The river serves as a primary tourist destination of the town of Pandan, Antique. Tourists can swim on the river’s Malumpati health spring or traverse the river on bamboo rafts. Bugang River ranked first among the cleanest inland bodies of water in the region for three consecutive years and eventually won the “Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran” as the cleanest river in the Philippines.
The river is supported by several springs, one of which is the major source of the municipality’s water supply. Moreover, the same river serves as the municipality’s tourist resort whose cool and fresh water provides a soothing and relaxing sensation to many local excursionist and tourists. Bugang River stretches 6 kilometers from its source and empties into the vast Sulu Sea.
At times, we needed to walk on rickety bamboo bridges that span across some of the several streams that crisscross Bugang River.
The water is so clear that we can actually see individual rocks and water lilies under the surface! Bugang River is considered to be the cleanest inland body of water in the country, and it has official awards to prove that title.
