Heavy Spelunking Needed in Calabidongan Cave, the Cave of the Bats

Calabidongan Cave Situated 2 km from Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave this cave features an underground stream and a population of bats (calabidong in bikol). It literally means “cave of the bats.” Explorers have to trek, cross over brooks and river before reaching the cave mouth and swim across a seven-foot lagoon called lizard’s gate; then, some out into an overwhelming cathedral with streak of light pouring in from its ceiling. Located around 3km from Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave, the more challenging Calabidongan Cave (literally, Cave of the Bats) is for more adventurous, confident spelunkers as its partially flooded interior requires you to swim a short distance within the cave. It can only be accessed when water levels allow (typically from March to June). Guides (P500) at Hoyop-Hoyopan can arrange transport; exploration of Calabidongan’s subterranean depths takes a couple of hours. The grotto-like formation inside is so enchanting in which it amazes visitors and tourist. The cave is also known as the “Caves of the Bats”. The cave is good for trekking inside. 2-km from Hoyop-Hoyopan, these caves feature an underground stream and a population of bats. Pottery, human bones, beadwork and other artifacts believed to be 4,000 years old have been found and can be seen at Camalig Church.
