The Pasaka Festival, now on its 25th year, is just one event that shows the resiliency of the townspeople. It is also a religious celebration that pays homage to the town’s patroness, Our Lady of Assumption. The festival is an annual thanksgiving celebration of all the blessings received. The festivity is annually held on August 14.

“Pasaka” is a Waraynon word and local term which means “to invite progress, good health and good fortune” for the years to come.

Pasaka is a yearly festival that celebrates Tanauanon’s rich town history through a display of extravagant and colorful parade of indigenous costumes and street dancing to depict the town’s livelihood, culture and origins.

“Pasaka” is derived from one the vernacular languages of Leyte, Philippines, Waray-waray, which means invitation to progress, health, and luck for the inhabitants for the coming year.

It is usually held every August 14 of the year as the main attraction of the Tanauan, Leyte’s Town Fiesta. A must-see Pasaka dance-drama competition is usually held before or after the street dancing participated by different school contingents of Tanauan, Leyte in the town plaza. Pasaka is a pride of Tanauan and a great merrymaking treat for those who wants to experience a taste of local culture and festival. Frenzied cheers from the crowd filled the air as dancers clad in colorful costumes moved gracefully to rhythmic festival beats in this year’s Pasaka Festival in Tanauan, Leyte.

Seven teams representing various schools showcased their history and culture through festival presentations in the town plaza Sunday morning.

Some came in crab and sea turtle costumes highlighting their town’s rich marine resources. Some also danced as they weave to showcase their banig industry.

Pasaka comes from a Waraynon word that means to invite good luck and progress.
