A very festive Chinese New Year celebration is held in Iloilo, which holds the distinction of having one of the largest concentration of “Tsinoys” or Filipinos with Chinese ancestry or descent in the country. This year, the Iloilo Chinese New Year is held every February 12. The Chinese parade will start from the Capitol grounds and end in the Freedom Grandstand, where a program will start at 4pm. The Chinese New Year program at the Freedom Grandstand will feature cultural shows, a food festival, and a grand fireworks display. This is the first and biggest Chinese Lunar New Year event held outside of Metro Manila that started in 2002. The festival is managed and organized by the Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Association (ICFCA). The celebration is an impressive display of spectacular Chinese dances, dragon dance, food festival and city-wide parade participated in by prominent Chinese schools of Iloilo City such as Sun Yat High School, Hua Siong College of Iloilo, Ateneo de Iloilo and many others. The Filipino-Chinese community gather in this annual celebration to pay tribute to their rich Chinese tradition and heritage that symbolizes their unity with their Ilonggo brothers.
