The world-renowned Holy Week observance in Bantayan has attracted hordes of both local and foreign tourists. The highlight of the event is the solemn foot procession on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday when life-size images and icons are mounted on elaborately-decorated carrozas that depict various tableaus of the Passion of Christ. Summer is the most awaited season in every place! End of classes, vacations, etc.  But still we have to pass this what we called ‘Holy Week’ where most of the people do some sacrifices like fasting, crucifixion, etc. but there is a place where people don’t have to undergo some sacrifices like not eating meat, etc. it is only in Bantayan Island where people are exempted by the Vatican Council to eat meat during the Holy Week for several reasons. I’ve heard a lot about Bantayan Island’s ‘unique’ Holy Week celebration. They say that the ‘Semana Santa’ in Bantayan is truly a must-see. According to these stories, while Christians all over the world sit quietly and fast in their homes, Bantayanons eat meat (lechon, to be more specific) and hold huge parties during Christendom’s most holy period. Why, exactly, you ask? Well, local historians say that in the 1800s, a papal permission exempted the residents of Bantayan Island from their religious duty on Good Friday. It is said that Bantayanon fishermen usually do not set out to fish during Good Friday. And since Bantayanons usually eat fish, they eat meat on Good Friday, instead.
