Sillag Festival is a Colorful Festival of Lights

SILLAG FESTIVAL

The moon did not show itself here on the eve of March 10, but what the sky lacked in illumination, it made up for in color.

Thousands of people gazed upward as sky lanterns in red, green, and violet rose through the air, later followed by a dazzling fireworks display. This is La Union’s Sillag Festival of Lights — only the second time the province held the event, and already it had begun to generate buzz and attract both tourists and potential investors.

“Sillag” is an Ilocano word meaning moonbeam or illumination from the moon. The festival was anchored on that theme — lights — with various activities kicking in as soon as the sun went down.

To most tourists, La Union is synonymous with picturesque churches and surfing spots. Sillag Festival wanted to bring something different to the table by creating a light-themed summer festival, anchored on the unique co-existence of a piece of cultural heritage with new, modern development projects. On top of the ridge, the lighthouse at Poro Point winked rhythmically as thousands of La Union residents gathered along the beach for the cheery Sillag festival of lights at the former Wallace Air Station over the weekend.

One by one, revelers released hope lanterns into the moonless sky, clearly the highlight for many families that brought their children, Sunday evening, into the normally restricted enclave to witness the nighttime spectacle. Sillag is an Ilocano term which means moonbeam or illumination from the moon.

The festival will focus on the historic Poro Point Lighthouse which has been a beacon for ships and boats plying Poro Point at night but is now also being promoted as an integral component of the tourism development inside the PPFZ.

The festival aims to attract foreign and domestic tourists to create a mass market and much as the Poro Point Lighthouse will serve as an economic beacon to encourage business and commerce in the PPFZ and the rest of the municipalities of the Province of La Union.
