Mt. Asog has a colorful history. It was named after a ancient datu (chieftain) of the Agtas named Asog, who reigned over the region. Sometimes it is also called Mt. Sumagang, which means “Mountain of the Rising Sun”. In some lowland areas, the sun seemingly rises from the mountain itself. Mount Asog or Mount Iriga is a dormant old volcano the lies along Iriga City and Buhi Camarines Sur stunningly standing 1,140 MASL with difficulty level of 4/9 similar to Mount Cristobal of Southern Tagalog.

First part of the trail are houses of the local (agta tribe) that will lead you to the foot of the mountain entering the enclosed private properties at some part. Mount Asog are exposed to sun with ninety percent plus assault. Wear gloves, bring sun/rain protection, apply sunblock and bring extra hydration because there is no presence of water source along the trail. An old dormant stratovolcano located at Bicol lies a prominent mountain known to mountaineer as Mt.Asog but to local it is Mt.Iriga straddling into multiple towns of Camarines Sur in particular Iriga and Buhi. According to some article, underneath its crater lies 4 fault line and may erupt anytime without warning but as to date the mountain remain calm. My difficulty rating for this mountain is 4/9 similar to Mt.Cristobal. The summit crater rim is very astonishing as it will offer the hiker if weather is fine; you can see the old crater at the caldera and the Pili peak.  Read More:  https://mountaintipsandtops.wordpress.com/2014/01/22/travel-guide-and-tips-for-climbing-mt-asog-or-mt-iriga-iriga-city-camarines-sur/
