Based in history, the stories of Old Volcano and Sunken Cemetery are closely tied together. Where in strong earthquake happened in 1871 that the cemetery submerged in water and the ancient Spanish church is destroyed. Both lay between the sea and the Old Volcano. Camiguin also played an important role during the first few years of Spanish colonization. In 1521, after landing in Homonhon and Limasawa, Ferdinand Magellan and his men headed their way to Camiguin. Then in 1598, this time following the visit of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the first Spanish settlement in the island was established. Catarman, located southwest of Mambajao, was the major trading center of Camiguin until 1871 before the violent eruption of Mt. Vulcan. The catastrophic event wiped out communities and sank some coastal settlements beneath the sea. Walkway to Old Volcano and Stations of the Cross is an 8 kilometer path with 14 human-sized stations situated at Mt. Vulcan in Barangay Bonbon, Catarman. The spot is actually one of the famous tourist destination in Camiguin Island especially during the Lenten Season as it serves as a pilgrimage site to Roman Catholic devotees.
