Mount Pan de Azucar, Spanish for “Sugarloaf”, is located on Pan de Azucar Island. It is one of the mountains and hills worldwide named “Sugarloaf” because of its tall conical shape resembling an old sugarloaf of the 19th century, not because of its resemblance to Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as falsely reported on some local websites.

At 574 meters the steep-sided Mt. Pan de Azucar, also called Mt. Manaphag, is the most prominent feature and distinguishable landmark of the island. The lofty cone is one of the inactive volcanoes in the country. The island is ringed by beaches, such as Lumpatan Beach in Bagotao, Brgy. Macatunao which are golden-yellow to white in color. Pan de Azucar Islands is a group of islands located in Concepcion, Iloilo, Panay Island west central Philippines. It is about 111.4 kms. from the city and be reached through a series of rides of jeepney, van, bus, motorcycle & ferry boat. It is made up of exotic islets with cave-like gateway which tourists can enjoy swimming and feeling the ambience of solitude. The tropical backdrop includes coconut which can serve as foundation for your hammock and can quench your thirst with its juice which is a good cleansing agent for our kidney.

Mt. Manaphag is a 573-foot land mass considered as one of the steepest in the country. It is frequented by mountain climbing enthusiasts such as the Sigarong Backpackers. The mountain, which can be seen from afar (as far as Negros Island), easily distinguishes itself from its surroundings and provides Conception a magnificent and interesting landmark because of its shape and size. The island was named after “Pan de Azucar” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil because of its similar appearance. Read More:  http://hamsternice.blogspot.com/2010/06/island-hopping-pan-de-azucar-island.html

One of the most exciting climbs in Visayas is a land-and-sea adventure that will take you to the northeastern islands off Panay in Concepcion, Iloilo, where Mt. Manaphag in Pan de Azucar Island is a towering presence. Its ethereal appearance of a sugar loaf (hence, it shares its name with its more popular counterpart in Brazil) is visible even from the northern Negros towns of Silay and Talisay, and the most striking feature, to the eye of a mountaineer, would be its steepness.  Read More: http://www.pinoymountaineer.com/2009/05/mt-manaphag-pan-de-azucar-island-606.html
