This was my typical day in Paruparong Bukid (Mountain Butterfly) Nature Conservation Center in Babatngon, Leyte – in the morning, I watched the sun rise from the balcony of a nipa tree house. Then I went down one of the pathways lined with herbs and surrounded by nipa and coconut palms to walk meditatively around the labyrinth while also taking in the mountains in the distance. I walked through the Zen garden of trees and shrubs then entered the butterfly sanctuary to watch butterflies wake up with the sun, lazily opening their wings at first then flying with more vigor.
The night at Paruparong Bukid was far from dull, too. The skies there are one of the clearest and starriest I have ever seen, occasionally streaked with shooting stars. The fireflies flitting from one leaf to another in the mango and mahogany trees would give the falling stars a run for their money, though. After supertyphoon Yolanda wrecked the conservation center, the place need to timely renovate its enclosure to safeguard and conserve the butterfly’s population. So while restoring the area, Paru-parong Bukid offered other alternate activities such as kayaking.
Guests can kayak on the river by starting at a small stream from the opening area then stroll around the mangrove forest where a wide watercourse awaits them at the end. Guides assist the visitors and let them rest at the endpoint while serving them fresh buko juice.
Notes:
- Still, they restored an open and redesigned garden lodged with flowering plants that attract butterflies so still you can see some of these multi-coloured creatures flying around the area.
- It has a mini restaurant where you can order snacks and meals for the day.
- There are cottages and rooms available for overnight use. Different fees according to size.

Paruparong Bukid Nature Conservation Center is home to the more peaceful and colorful butterflies and birds in Babatngon, Leyte. It is where nature lovers and people of all ages become fascinated by the wonders of nature.
Our vision is to provide an environment where ecology is protected; where a garden is maintained through organic agricultural practices; to bring awareness to all visitors regarding the fragility and beauty of a ‘nature’ garden, where butterflies and birds are free, medicinal herbs abound and flowers bloom. A garden where a sense of tranquility and health is felt whenever Nature is allowed to grow the ‘traditional’ way. Our vision is to provide a positive impact on our guests regarding the inter-relatedness of nature and wellness, to be a model ‘nature steward’, where we conserve and protect the resources of Mother Earth.
