TANGKAAN BEACH
Tangkaan Beach in Padre Burgos, S. Leyte is the only white sand beach that can be found in the whole mainland of Leyte. The beach in the eastern part of Leyte is made of black sand, while in the western part it is mostly of pebbles and stone and rocks. However, Tangkaan beach proves to be different. Not only has it white sand for the beach but it also has some beautiful rock formations. The sea is clear and surprisingly it has beautiful corals teeming with small fishes just two or three meters from the shore during low tides. The name itself has a story. ‘Tangka” means to attempt. In the past, there have been several attempts by the Moros to raid the place, but they could not get to land their boats because of the strong currents. Hence, the name Tangkaan. This strong current, I found out when I went on snorkeling. I did not even have to exert any effort to swim as the current was fast. Southern Leyte is blessed to have white sandy beaches with awesome rock formations! We are blessed to have Tangkaan Beach! Located in Brgy. Tangkaan, Padre Burgos, this public beach is a perfect spot to see Limasawa Island from afar.
Apart from a stretch of white sand and awesome rocks, Tangkaan is also a perfect spot for cliff diving during high tide. Snorkeling is a great idea too. This is Tangkaan Beach. This beautiful beach with picturesque rock formations lies on the southern part of Southern Leyte. Its name comes from the Visayan vernacular, “tangka-an” which means “entrance” in English. It is located in the town of Padre Burgos where you can also get a view of the historical Limasawa Island. The shoreline which spans to approximately 9 meters is covered with fine, white sand. A perfect place for those who seek serenity and solitude.
True to its name, Tangkaan Beach is indeed a gateway to a lot of adventures. Not only making Southern Leyte a bastion of potentials for tourism but also the best place for beach bums and aficionados to find rest, relaxation and retreat.
