ENCHANTED RIVER

Enchanted River is as mysterious as its name itself. Like the Wakulla Springs in Tallahassee, Florida, no one knows where the water comes from. Is it a spring? Did parts of the water come from the sea? Six hundred meters away is the coastline of Hinatuan Bay, which faces the Pacific Ocean.
The river looks like a photograph that has been photoshopped; it reminds you of the movie Blue Lagoon. The waters are so crystal clear that you can see even the deepest part. If you don’t know much about swimming, try to swim in the area where there the shade of color is from blue to green; once it is darker blue, it means it is deep already. The Enchanted River at Surigao Del Sur is crystal clear, perfect for swimming.
But what is baffling is that the waters look so shallow but no one really knows how deep the river is. There were some stories circulated that a foreigner tried to plunge into the visible riverbed and finds it unfathomable. Situated between the boundaries of Barangays Talisay and Cambatong, about 14 kilometers from the town proper of Hinatuan, is a saltwater river that flows out to the Pacific Ocean. It has a depth of 80 feet, and it seemed not long enough to consider a river. The source of its water is something that until now is still unknown. Adding more to its mystery are various stories and folklore by the locals, such as mermaids and other creatures watching over. Perhaps one reason why it’s famous for tourists is its beautiful blue waters surrounded by lush green vegetation.
This is our very first time we visit the place, and we’ve been enchanted immediately. Its super clear waters have a unique shade that is so awesome to look at. You can see the fish that seemed to be just floating at the river’s limpid pool. Even by just staring at it, you will still be caught by the magic spell of the Enchanted River. Located on the island of Mindanao, hidden in the Philippine jungle is a majestic river that appears to pop out of the ground just to send its crystal clear blue waters out to sea. This short stretch of river situated on the east coast of the southernmost island of the Philippines is known as Enchanted River or the Hinatuan Sacred River. Meandering 648 meters between the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean at Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, this river is so strikingly clear, that its sapphire blue hues look like solid gemstones glinting in the sun.
So wrapped in magnificence and mystery, this place was once locally known as Libwak before the diplomat Modesto Farolan, referred to it as the Enchanted River in his famous poem, “Rio Encantado”. This mystical site marked by its shimmering, crystal clear blue waters, surrounded by thick jungle, vines, and orchids, has, therefore, become one of the premier tourist destinations of the province. Other than its beauty, there are tales of mermaids, magical fairies and spirits at the Hinatuan Enchanted River as well. Therefore steeped in legend and folklore, this river is a natural wonder like no other. Read More: https://travel.earth/visit-the-enchanted-hinatuan-river-in-the-philippines/amp/
