Samar is divided into three parts – Northern Samar, Western Samar and Eastern Samar. For purposes of clarity, Western Samar is simply referred to as SAMAR.

San Juanico Bridge is part of the Pan-Philippine Highway and stretches from Samar to Leyte across the San Juanico Strait in the Philippines. Its longest length is a steel girder viaduct built on reinforced concrete piers, and its main span is of an arch-shaped truss design. The San Juanico Bridge is said to be the longest bridge in the Philippines. The bridge is also known as a symbol of love by Waraynons which connects the sister islands of Samar and Leyte.
The 4-year construction of San Juanico Bridge started in 1969 and costs $21.9 million.
The San Juanico Bridge is the main route for Waraynons in the Leyte and Samar provinces to connect with their relatives and love ones. The San Juanico Bridge is the longest bridge in the Philippines, with a length of 2 km. It crosses the San Juanico Strait, bridging the islands of Samar and Leyte.
It connects Tacloban City on the Leyte side and Santa Rita town on the Samar side. It offers many picturesque views, especially of the San Juanico Strait with its thousand whirlpools as well as the islets of the province. It is the narrowest strait in the Philippines & separates the islands of Samar and Leyte. At its narrowest point, the strait is only 2 km wide.
It is approximately 10 minutes from downtown Tacloban City and is accessible by passenger jeepney, bus, motorcab or private vehicle.
