Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave is a natural tunnel-like structure situated in Camalig, Albay. It has been said that these caves were the primitive habitats of the natives in the area. It has been discovered during the Japanese occupation and has been one of the most popular attractions in Albay. The name Hoyop-Hoyopan was derived from the local word “Hoyop” which means to blow. The cave that we went to is called as Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave. The cave has 3 main entrances and 3 floors, and what is fascinating is that it has its own ventilation. The wind passes through the openings of this cave which makes it cool inside and also, that is where its name came from. Hoyop, which means (ihip) blow. The cave also doesn’t stink unlike other caves that I have visited.
What is also interesting is the formation of stalagmites and stalactites–although you need a great imagination to enjoy the tour. Hoyop-Hoyopan cave is located in Camalig, Albay, about 30 minutes away from Legazpi City. As far as I know, there is no direct transportation which will take you in this cave. What you can do is hire a tricycle or a van in Daraga (instead of Legazpi, so that the price will be cheaper) to transport you in this destination. Hoyop-Hoyopan cave is one of Albay’s famous attractions because of its historic legacy. For one, it has been around for a long time at about 3,000 B.C. to 4,000 B.C. The 280 square meter-cave was called Hoyop-hoyopan, a Bicolano term for “blow of the wind.” This huge and windy cave is filled with various shapes of rock formations, where you can use your imagination to formulate different figures inside the cave.
